Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace by Foo Fighters [Album Review]

Title: ‘Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace’
Artist: Foo Fighters
Rating: 4 / 5

‘Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace’ is the Foo Fighters 6th studio album. Ten years have past since the Foo Fighters team up with super producer Gil Norton for the Colour and the Shape album. As far as the Foo Fighters go I would rate the ‘Colour and the Shape’, their debut album and ‘There is nothing left to lose’ as their strongest albums. After a fortnight or so with ‘Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace’ in high rotation I would be prepared this album in that company.

Like many of the tracks from the album, you could describe ‘Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace’ as a slow burn. On first listen tracks like ‘The Pretender’ and ‘Long Road to Ruin’ will no doubt stand out from the pack, however, after repeated listens, the remainder of the tracks will catch up with you.

Songs such as ‘Let It Die’ build quietly, lullaby style before belting you over the head with some trademark Foo Fighters rock.

‘Cheer Up, Boys (Your Make Up Is Running)’ is probably the best example of the Foo Fighter rock/pop sound on the album.

The ‘Ballad Of The Beaconsfield Miners’ is an instrumental that will most likely cause you to have flashbacks of the ‘Deliverance’ soundtrack, whilst ‘Home’ is a piano driven ballad of sorts.

One of the album highlights for me is ‘Erase/Replace’ which I think would be better suited as an album closer due to its ‘epic’ vibe. I have to say though, that I am a sucker for a good single, and ‘The Pretender’ is as good as anything that the Foo Fighters have put out in the past 10 years. It’s the sort of song that provides the listener with some instant gratification if you like. Turn it on, crank it up, and let it go.

Overall, this album is a return to form, although some might argue the form never left them, this is the sort of album the Foo Fighters needed at this stage in their careers. If you liked ‘There is nothing left to lose’ then you will probably also enjoy this.

Here’s the film clip from YouTube for the first single ‘The Pretender’. Enjoy.
